I have a vision for a segmented blank that I just cant find the right woods for.

What I want is colors that suggest a flame. I'm not making actual flame inlay, I just want those colors to suggest flame in an abstract sort of way.

What I am missing is a really bright orange.

I already have a apple that is light yellow (yellowheart had a hint of green I didn't like). Osage orange that is more yellow than orange - darker than the apple. I've seen osage orange that is much more orange, but when I cut it I expect it to be lighter (not sure).

I have the most orange piece of cocobolo I could pick out, but it just doesnt seem quite right. And, dealing with the oiliness on snall segmentation would be a PITA.

I looked at Paduk as a possibility, but was told it would turn brown.

Any suggestions?

I turned a pen out of padauk and depending on the finish you put on it, it can be orange. I made a slimline with Padauk and with a CA finish it was the brightest orange I have ever seen in a wood. Burnish after light-touch sanding and it should be orange for you too. Osage orange is very yellow, not recommended. Find a piece of padauk and check the ends of the blank for orange color.

I picked up a piece of padauk. WIll be hard to tell until I get the wax off and cut it. We'll see.

With the dye, is there a dye that will penetrate all the way through? It's semented so dying after turning is not an option.

Paduak looks good when you first turn it, but will turn brown and darken with exposure. You might need to look at stabilized woods to keep the color.

Lazerlinez -- flame orange.

Woodturners Catalog Rainbow Sunset -- the one I have is more orange than red, but still not a pumpkin orange.

Also, some of the dyed/stabilized box elder burl from Arizona Silhouette, dyed brown, looks more orange.

I have some chacta viga that is bright orange, and some padauk that is a red orange. I made a pen with padauk and texas ebony for a college kid whose team colors were orange and black and it turned out perfect. Paela is another name for chacta viga. You can get it in turning squares from woodworkers source.
