Recently I saw a pic of a pen holder that someone had made. I had been wanting to do that so that was just the inspiration I needed. Mine is curly maple and cherry, thats what I had on hand. One thing I learned, ofset the little divets in the base from the large holes in the top so the pens will lean back. Since they are captured in the holes I didn't think it would matter but it would look and work better if the pens lean back. The brass posts are for making card holders, well, duh, thats what I used them for.
Thanks to whoever gave me the design idea and for all who look.

Very nice. I have been meaning to try the holder myself. Thanks for the tip on non-alignment of holes.

Thanks for all the comments. Its always nice to see someone appreciate your work. Eagle- how are the posts connected to your base
and the brass nuts? I may do another one and your construction method
looks like a winner

1/4" bolt up through the base.Flat head I think.
THe "columns" are just drilled and turned on the mandrel.
Brass nuts come out of the specialty bin at the hardware store.
"brass plated"
I looked at lamp parts but the hardware is expensive for those.
I reasoned the idea was the pens, not the display.

(add in)
I have made them for 7,11, and 15 pens.
When I got to the one for 15 I made a template out of BB,the holes for the posts become tooling holes.
I rough them with the bandsaw and use a pattern bit in my router.

Great ideas all around. I am inspired to make my own. Maybe after my wife gives me my Christmas present....a 14" Jet bandsaw. [:)]
