Wood Identification and information

Hello,
Where it the best resource to determine wood types? Example, if I have a piece of wood of unknown type what is the best resource to determine what it is.

Also, where can I find interesting facts on the woods that I use for cards to give to my patrons?

I have been to hobbit house and got some information, but it did not have information on some other woods that I was looking for like Onyxwood. As a matter of fact no one has had any information on it. That may not be the correct name but it was the name that it was given to me under. any ideas?
