I just missed out on winning a piece of wood from the paddle wheel of the Steam Boat Delta Queen. They handed out three pieces signed by the Master of the vessel on board last week to winners of a trivia contest.

Each piece looked big enough to make a couple pens.

I think I shall have to come of with a pen design symbolic of the paddle wheel.

I've never been on that boat, is it a casino? If so, try again. I'm SURE the next time is you're lucky shot!;)

I have a friend who is supposed to get me a few pieces of wood that is from the house of the man who wrote the song "The Old Rugged Cross".

Can't wait!!!

The Delta Queen is the last of the golden age of steam boats. Built in the 20s at a time when one could build a steam boat for $60K, the Delta Queen and King cost $1M each, making them the most palatial steam boats ever built. Today there are many modern replicas of these old paddle wheel steam boats, but only the Delta Queen remains in operation in the four rivers (Cumberland, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers). The Delta Queen is a National Historic Landmark.

Barring a miracle, this will be the last year of operation for the Delta Queen as her Congressional exemption from the Safety of Life at Sea Act will expire this year, and it appears unlikely that it will be renewed.
