Some of my Curly Gum looks like that but, if you never got any blanks from me, the chances are, it is not it...!

I assume the grain looks similar on the opposite side , and different or less obvious on adjacent sides . Probably a burl of some kind , could even be a maple , although the colour doesn`t look like it .

After doing more looking, I'm thinking it may be figured satinwood.
It looks similar to an example on Packard's website.
I took another picture of it from a different angle and different side.
Now I wish I had sanded down the sides and took some pictures before turning it round.
A member of this site, Bree, made a cigar style with satinwood and it looks very much like the same grain.

Well, this is going to take a little longer than planned.
I discovered that the ID of the brass tubes for the rinehart are about .002 smaller than the Jr Gent I was making. This tells me that the brass tube is slightly thicker because the OD measured exactly the same. So, I had to make some new TBC bushings. I think probably the delrin finishing bushings will still work but I have not yet tried them.

It does look like satinwood. But I am with Mike S. Turn it already. It will look great no matter what it is.

That is an awesome piece of timber. You can use a different kit if you really think you need to but I like it. I have made lots of those kits and they are good sellers too. I think you have a winner there very nice indeed.

I too like this kit and I may get another one in gold TI and switch it out, Just to see how it would look. I was surprised that the hex fittings on this pushed in by hand but the fittings in the smaller tube needed to be pressed in. Not sure why that is.

Perhaps the wood is fiddleback redgum from Oz. I have some pieces exactly the same. You need sharp tools to turn this stuff, no scraping.

I more inclined to agree with Dale I got some curly pymina from some one here. And this like almost identical. IMHO this doesnt have enough of a yellowish tint to be Satinwood.

Satinwood tends to be to the yellow look. Afzelia would be my guess.
