Right now I am just using the replacement shaft and compression nut.

If your trying to use the MT holder , No . If your using just the shaft , Yes . The tapered part is designed to fit into a Morse Taper spindle on a normal head stock .

if you already have that mandrel i would say yes unscrew the shaft and use it. if you are wanting to purchase a mandrel just buy the straight shaft, no morse taper. save yourself some money.

PSI makes a mandrel with a setscrew that fits shopsmith's 5/8in arbor. I'd just use the shaft from what you've already got!!
