My son in law brought me a green burl that a friend had cut.
So what I need to know is should I cut it in 2-3 inch thick slabs to cut later for pens or leave it whole.
I know if it is cut it will need to be painted with the stuff you all talk about all the time.. cant think of the name of it now.

If it is left whole it should take 2-3 years to dry out probably.
its all i want to lift and when I did I only lifted it 2 feet to get it off the ground

Depends on how you plan on using it. If your going to use it for pen blanks cut them oversized and seal the ends. It will help them dry out quicker. If your going to turn a bowl, you could turn it completely to finish with a thin wall.

I'd cut it into 2" or 3" slabs like you said and anchorseal those. If you let the whole burl just sit for even a few weeks, it will crack. Just remember...you can always cut bigger pieces smaller. Don't limit yourself to just pen blanks. Depending on the size of the thing, if you cut a couple bowl blanks out of it, you'll have plenty left over for pens.
