After two days of making pens, and a pile of shavings on my counter around the lathe and on the floor, I dropped the pin from the pin chuck I was using. A metal pin whose OD is .0625" (1/16) an whose length is 1" is now somewhere in the shavings on my workbench under or around the lathe or on the floor. The prevervial needle in a hay stack. It was the only pin I had. I reached for my magnet on the end of a telescoping shaft and began to probe around in the shavings on the lathe, on the workbench, and on the floor. I finally found the pin, but guess what else I fished out? The magnet was covered with metal shavings. Not just a few, but covered....like the shavings (I know they're not metal) in an Etch-a-sketch.Not just once, but I stopped after pulling back the covered magnet three times! I don't sand bushings, or I didn't think I did....I hone my tools quite a bit. The shavings had to come from the bushings or the tools or both. Very interesting.
