What type of wood

I got this blank in a grab bag. Can someone help me identity it do I can get more? thanks.

It's clearwood. You can tell by the way the grain interlocks.

Looks like Noseeem which grows high in the sky and is very light, use sharp tools.

It has a grain pattern like snake wood but if thats its natural color I would guess wenge. In my experience with it, it's a splintery large grain African wood.

Grain doesn't seem as open as I would expect from Wenge (even seen in your example...)... and it does seem to be missing the lighter orange tones I've seen in snakewood... I'll have to take a look at a few pieces I have in the garage, but I think I have something marked "Beefwood" that looks similar in color and pattern...

It looks like you've shown us 2 sides, are they opposite sides or adjacent sides (I'm hoping the photos are opposite and the adjacent sides may look different...) or can you show us the end grain?

Any other info on where it may have come from? What other types of wood were included in the grab bag that might put a source location to them (i.e. mostly australian/asian/african/etc varieties???)

I have some older pieces of snakewood that have the same coloration. Very hard wood. Keep your tools sharp and it cuts fairly well. I had some reaction to the dust created by using dull tools and the sanding. Dried my throat something terrible and started a coughing fit of sorts.

Because it is so hard, I made a pusher for my drill press for assembling my pens out of it. I have also attached a picture of a blank.

I have had some "leopard wood" in the shop with similar pattern -- Not nearly as dense as snakewood.

The term "Leopard Wood" gets bandied about with wood vendors and can mean several different species.

Grab bags usually get made of off cuts and less than premium stuff so suspect that snakewood is not the highest probability.

I've had leopard wood and it tends have a nobbed/bumpier surface than snake wood. Leopardwood

Snakewood if it is really dense. My leopardwood is not so dark as this but very similar pattern.

Thank You all for the feed back. It is a very dense wood. I think I'm going to go with snake wood, with some of the other pictures I found.
