I started to turn a western diamondback snake skin The lower casting went very good and polished up just great. But then I started the upper blank And the acrylic just broke out. The snake skin is in tack.

Have any of you turners sent back a blank to have a 2nd casting?

or

Put a Antler top on the pen?

Any other ideas please speak up thanks

Bill,

I cannot answer the second casting question.

How much of the acrylic broke away? Is it possible to make matching "oops" bands at both ends of the tube with something like mesquite?

Antler certainly is a possibility, as is a wood that is local to rattler territory. I would avoid a highly figured wood as you would not want the wood to battle the snakeskin for attention.

FWIW,

Before you send it to someone for recasting, you may want to talk with whoever made it originally and at the least, find out what the resin is so there are no compatibility issues.
