I just picked up some wood turning blanks (1" x 1" x 12")at Rockler. I am going to cut them in half for pen blanks. They are coated in wax or a wax like substance. Is the wood sealed to prevent drying out? Will I need to remove the wax and let them dry? I have worked with blanks sealed on the ends but never the whole piece.

Thanks for your input.

The wood is sealed to slow the drying process and minimize checking. As for cutting them in half, I would not. I would cut them to whatever length is needed to minimize waste. If you cut them in half, you will get only two blanks. If you cut for a specific kit, you should be able to get at least five half blanks. If you are going to make slimlines, quarter the 1x1 blank and you will get 4 times as many blanks.
