I recently acquired some walnut and cedar I plan to make pens out of. Any thing I need to be aware concerning these woods? I am new to penmaking and was curious in general about characteristics that may vary between species in penmaking in general.

They are both open grained so make sure you seal them well before finishing. They both turn well, but the cedar is rather soft so don't get too agressive.

I just the other day turned a pen from walnut and it looked great. My brother in law is a vp of a large transport Co. and I gave it to him in the hope he will order more for his business. Looks good.

Depending on what kind of cedar (eastern/western) you should probably wear a mask. Eastern aromatic cedar is very irritating to some people, myself included. I can be around the wood and the aroma but the dust tears me up.
