Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is?
It is very hard but not overly heavy. No smell to it eithar as I first suspected that Ed found this in a damp corner somewhere before sending it to me as a freebie. Hehe, he must have thought I needed a new challenge.
The ends were split so bad that I decided to square them and add some pieces to the end so I could turn it.
I've had some maple with worm holes like this but I can't imagine getting the green dye to penetrate like this.
It was an ugly blank to start with and it doesn't look much better now that it is turned.

Looks like "stinkbark oak" to me. (That's what I call any wood that I don't know what it is).

LOL... I call it FireWood... made a lot of pens out of it, and they often come out great...

Looks to me like the Spalted Maple variety of FireWood that grows around me...
