Uniball???

Can a Uniball refill be used on a standard pen such as a sierra or cigar??? I usually to this date have only put them on a capped pen because I think I read they dry out if exposed to air and that is why they come with a protector on the tip. Or am I thinking of something else???

If they can not be used what is a good replacement refill that does not require modifications to the kit???
