This afternoon I turned an "environ" blank I got from CSUSA. I love the way it looks...like granite, but was surprised that I had to sharpen my tools several times to turn one pen. It says it is made from newsprint and soy, but it surely took the edge off my gouge and skew in a hurry.

Is this typical, or am I doing something wrong?

Hmm I turned two and didn't notice much issue. Are you using HSS tools?

Yes, crown HSS standard roughing gouge, skew, and skewchigouge. I would sharpen the tool, and it would cut fine for a few passes, then basically just stop cutting until I sharpened it again, then it would cut fine for a while. Maybe with carbide tools it would cut better? I've been lusting after one!

Paper is very hard on a cutting tool. We had all kinds of problems in the printshop and newspaper when I worked there last century. I've been waiting some time to use that line, hehehe.

I experienced the same thing. Just dont let your tool sit at on spot trying to do something like a band as it will cause it to burn and smell awful. I did finish mine with no major issues.
