I'm throwing this out there as I've recently had an epiphany. Probably because I don't spend enough time in the library, just like in school

Anyways, I always thought/assumed TBC's was done with bushings (drilled accordingly), 60° centers and checked with calipers.

As I've recently realized you don't need bushings at all!!! You just need a set, or better, multiple sets of calipers and 60° centers.

Hopefully everyone else realized this so it's just old news.

I like using the bushings myself even if they aren't really needed.

1 - they keep me from having to check measurements as often. (I still do use calipers with the bushings)
2 - I have nicked my centers with the tools when not using bushings.
3 - When I sand without bushings, It's kinda easy to round end of the blank a little by sanding over the end.
4 - The blanks slips much more easily on the centers... Even when compared to regular cheap bushings.

You are correct Andrew! .... however I would add that a short tool rest, or extra long 60 degree centers (or otherwise modified) is also pretty essential. :)
