Taking Apart A Princeton

I finished a Princeton last week - it is basically the same as a Mesa/Wall Street II with a different nib and finial. The transmission seems stiff. I should be able to pull the nib and have the transmission come out of the finial, but it doesn't want to. Any creative ideas for gently pulling them apart? I don't want to use a punch, I am afraid I will damage the transmission. I want to pull the transmission out, then punch out the finial.

I figured out what was wrong. the ends of the barrel weren't quite square and that was jamming the mechanism.
