Turned a few pens when I first got the lathe a couple of weeks back that are not up to par with the work I'm doing now. I've put them together (don't ask me why, wasn't even happy with the work then) and now I'm wondering if I can take them back apart to salvage the kits. I know I'm cheap[:p].

Shouldn't be a problem. Get yourself a transfer punch set http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=transfer+punch&Submit=Go

You will be able to take any kit apart with this set.

Yes, they can be disassembled.
And, IMHO, even cheap kits are worth taking apart if for no other reason than the
practice so that when you have to repair a custom slimline, you'll have the experience.
I rarely suggest Harbor Freight but in this instance I have to: they sell a cheap and often on sale set of punches that are perfect for this use and less than the cost of buying a slimline disassembly kit.
HTH.

I had the same problem a few months ago and the transfer punches are a true find. I agree this is probably one of only a few things I would get at Harbor Fright(yes I said Fright)
They work GREAT! Every penturner should have a set.
