I have a turncrafter lathe..

When I turn the handle on the tailstock the live center isnt being pushed out to be tightened to the mandrel. I took it all apart and put it back together. Not exactly sure whats wrong. This just randomly started.

The first thing that comes to mind is to make sure the handwheel isn't just spinning on the shaft. There should be a set screw (allen head) that holds it to the shaft.

Next, go ahead and pull out the center quill and see if you can observe that the gear is spinning as you turn the handle. Make sure the teeth of the gear are clean and free of chips/swarf. Likewise the rack on the quill.

After that, the other thing that comes to mind is you somehow aren't getting the quill straight enough and it isn't engaging the gear.

thanks rw, after dinner i'll run down to the shop and see if i can get it to work. I do remember that the wheel is spinning on the shaft. Never really broke it down to see how it works exactly. Let ya know how I make out.
