I normally do most all my blank drilling on the lathe. I generally cut the blanks longer and mark the drill bit so I don't drill all the way through, then cut to size. Today for some stupid reason I miss marked the bit and drilled all the way through, when it went through the blank it exploded and the chuck and bit, came out of the tail stock and went flying about 15 feet across the shop. I must say I did change my pants, I could of kill myself. So please everyone be carefull and don't get to relaxed with what we do around our power equipment.

I agree with Rifleman .. if anything, the explosion should have blown your
chuck tighter INTO the tailstock.

I've had blanks do that before, but not when I drill through them. In fact,
I'd think that drilling through would relieve any pressure buildup.

I know that things like Corian and EOS can explode when heated. I've had
them pop at me if I wasn't careful drilling .. back out the bit and let it cool
off etc. They didn't fly apart, but something in there popped..
I know Tru-Stone will do this, too.

A friend who installs Corian told me that someone set a hot teapot on a
countertop and it not only cracked the counter, the teapot damaged the c
ceiling when it hit. It is LOUD!!

I wonder why that is .. and I wonder if acrylics do the same.

Glad you're OK & thanks for the heads up. I had a taken a class about 8 years ago & it was how to use a Table Saw / Cabinet Making. I still remember the "first" safety rule our instuctor told the class..............
  1. There is not part of your body that will stop this saw
  2. See rule 1
Every time I use my power tools, I hear these rules...........

Happy turning,

I was drilling African black wood. I think that I remember reading some where that you can use a bolt through the knock out hole of the tail stock to the MT to anchor it in place. maybe someone here can give me some ideas how to prevent it from happening again.

Is your MT on the chuck threaded? If so it's more than likely 1/4 thread. Take about 10 inches of threaded rod a flat washer & wing nut. Use it as a draw bar,
that will keep the chuck in the tailstock no matter what.
