Steelwood question?

I have some steelwood pen blanks, and can't even really find them when googling anymore, so don't know if they're still made. I think they're kind of like dymondwood? Anyway, just wondering if people think they require a finish on them?

Have not seen those around for a long time -- and they do much better with a top finish.

Steelwood is no long made. Too bad because I really liked the steel wood black. It was a spot on sub for ebony but without the cracking.
