I have been tiring different ways of stabilizing wood using the vacuum jar method. Here is what I found using poly http://tinyurl.com/c3hub

I have tried using Minwax Wood Hardener but not with the best results found it wasn't hard enough. This method works but darkens the wood quite a bit. Is there another substance (poly brand) that may not darken the wood as much?

How long did you allow the blank to dry before turning.... if the poly you used was not sufficiently hardened that might account for the sandpaper clogging...
Virtually all stabilizing compounds will cause a color shift in the woods... even the commercial stabilizers using resins have that effect...

I probably did not allow enough time for drying. I wll try again with a longer dring period. In the weeks instead of days
