I am using a pen mill to square the edges right to the edge of the brass before turning the wood. After I am done turning, the pressure of being on the mandrel tends to sort of mess up the nice ends. How can I end up with nice clean ends when I am done turning?

Put a piece of self stick sand paper on the back side of your pen mill. Use the pen mill and a sleeve made from 7mm brass tube to finish off the blank ends.

I sacrificed a warped mandrel. unscrewed the rod so I just had the morse taper. filled the hole with epoxy and sanded flat.
Now I just cut a sticky back sanding disc into squares and don't have to punch the hole. you can use the harbor freight transfer punches in the tail stock to hold the pen perpendicular
