I realize that we are just in the hobby/business of turning pens and don't need the sooper-dooper accuracy/precision that machinists do on a regular basis. However, the topic of center drilling comes up with some frequency here. Anyway, I ran across this post today which gives a pretty good comparison of the different types of drill bits available and how they perform. The post I'm referring to is about half way down the page by 6061billet here:
