Spalted hackberry, good or bad for pens??

Looking for opinions, have a chance to get some of what appears to be nice looking spalted hackberry. Can't find much info and no pictures of any finished pens.

I know JWOODWRIGHT said it requires a lot of ca but my experience is different. Personally, I don't know at what point 'spalting' ends and a hunk of wood is just plain rotten. I have a large amount of spalted hackberry that is hard all the way through. I make duck and other game calls from it, one won me third place in a woodturning competition. The spalting can give some very interesting and beautiful effects and the wood, when finished, can give a sort of 'depth' to it's luster. I have a picture of a duck call posted that I made from some of this wood.
