Spalt is rot, generally caused by mold. It comes in all different shapes and colors. Crotch describes a piece of wood that comes from where a branch separates from the trunk or another branch. The weight at the point where the branching occurs causes weight-induced stress to the grain, resulting in twists and turns that would not otherwise be expected.

I kinda thought spalt was a fungus or disease so I was sorta close. Now that you have described it I should have realize what crotch was, duh!

I take it then that spalted wood would need to be stabilized?

Most spalted wood will benefit from being stabilized. One exception is spalted tamarind which, even when spalted, is harder than woodpeckers lips.

Awesome pen!

Thanks for the links!

I am going to custom paint a couple of pens once I get the hang of turning. Painting on the small is nothing new to me.....

Billy,

Spalt is caused by fungus, I don't think antibiotic will help. Maybe Lotrimin or Tinactin will do the trick LOL.

Gregg,
Lou is right about the spalt (of course). One thing that is interesting about spalt, OK 2 things: the black lines are present in white spalt and represent the edges of the micro-organism colonies. It is called white spalt, because the area inside the lines is usually kind of bleached out. The other one is blue spalt, which is blue, or any number of other colors. There is a peach colored spalt, which might be blue spalt. It is present in mango.
