Wow I just noticed in the featured photos that scroll on top of the page someone has made a casino pen with the card shapes in it. I have been thinking about that for awhile and I see it has appeared. I am guessing from the name the kit is a lasered kit. Very nicely done. I guess I will have to rethink my design.

I just went to their web site lazerlinez.com and noticed they have the puzzle pen and the stars and strpies pen kits. Is this the same company that does Ken's pens???

Also it looks like he's using logo's like starbucks on some pens, Looks like he just copied Ken's stars and stripes and Lou's puzzle.

Ken makes his own kits. Looks like this guy has copied some of Ken's designs. We should not purchase from this place and we should encourage others we know to not purchase. Ken is one of us and has been very supportive of the IAP and has helped many many of us with our laser needs. We need to take care of our own.

What Don said...

Ken pretty much defined this market, and someone should at least do something new to expect the business.

Amen to both Don and Dale, we need to support those that support us.

using logos and trademarks

Using widely known, or any company's logo, without permission or a license is pretty risky. I'm not sure how some of the logos were done, like the ATL Hawks or the Gators because they sort of looks like a sticker, which would be ok. But engraving or inlaying a logo or company brand can land you lots of trouble and expense. Companies like Starbuck's and professional teams are serious about protecting their rights.

I agree in principle with not copying somebody's elses work, but it does happen frequently in business. That's why copyrights, trademarks and patents are valuable, although only useful as an expensive legal means of protection.

When was the puzzle pen first introduced? Was it earlier this year?

The puzzle kits have been around for several years but were designed and made by two of our members (Lou and Ken I believe) as a collaboration. They may be a protected design but I'm not sure.

Removed --- I may have had some valid things to say, but I personally think this whole thread could be erased. Not so we don't remember the things that were said here, but rather to give the person a better standing in the future. They did some VERY good things to prove themselves.

I decided to read his member information and I see that he is brand new to the forum and a new "citizen" of our country, so I am guessing that he does not understand about these issues. I am not making excuses for him but I do not think that he has a clue of how things work, especially of how we try to support our members first. I would not think that he is trying to steal designs from anyone, and maybe he has kens permission, I do not know. JMHO.

Here's an update everyone...I asked in his original classified ad whether he had a license agreement with Lou in regards to the puzzle pen kit, and he promptly sent me a PM saying he's spoken by email with Lou. I also mentioned to him that with what he has to offer, it would likely be a tough sell here with everyone's long time association with both Lou and Ken so....I get the impression he came up with the puzzle pen idea before Lou, he did send me a pic of his original 100 piece pen puzzle:eek: 'PLEASE DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER' This is all I know:wink:

My business will still go to Ken. Ken is the leader in laser cut inlay kits and is working hard to stay ahead of he game to provide us with new, innovative, and creative inlay kits. And I still say we should support those who support us.

Yep... Even if this new guy is on the up and up... He's got a tough market... Especially with Kens amazing deal for the IAP local clubs. I've made one of Kens puzzles for a gift, and will be doing more if I can find the market for it now that I'm trying to sell.

Saying he had emailed Lou is a long way from having Lou's permission to use the design idea. And there is still the matter of the use of Ken's Stars and Stripes designs.:frown:

Try using a sticker of an NFL/NBA/NHL team on something to make a profit without permission from that team and you will quickly learn that stickers are not OK. You cannot make and sell team merchandise without permission from the team. And they have an army of attorneys and deep pockets.

As far as anything else, what this guy is doing is at best unethical with the puzzle pen and the stars and stripes. My business will never go to him, only to Lou and Ken. This is not a class act.

Gerry is right about the stickers. As long as you purchase the decals or stickers and use it for your own personal use it's perfectly OK. But when you add it or apply it to an item and offer it for sale or make any kind of profit off of it you are infringing on a copywrite and could be liable for damages. This has been discussed on a rodbuilding forum many times in the past with people putting team logos on fishing rods.
