I have wanted to get into the world of carbide tools, but haven't had the extra cash to spend. I wound up with this Sorby cutter a while back in a bunch of other stuff I picked up at a "going out of turning sale". I decided to make a handle for it and give it a try. It is a little big for pens, but I found it to work well on acylic tonight. This is the only tool used in making the red & black aquabirght pen below.

With my normal 1/2" scraper for comparison.

Good job of making do with what you have. My dad used to say, "It's a poor craftsman that blames his tools". I think you'll like the 2" radius carbide cutter even better, it doesn't grab as much as the square ones. I got some from Indy-Pen-Dance for less than $7 a piece. If you used a 10-32 or 10-24 screw it will probably fit right on the shaft you have already. Keep at it.
