When I use a straight grain wood on twist pens, while assembling the pen, I often wonder if the wood grain should be aligned when the pen tip is retracted or extended.

Opinions?

Your pen so your call. Align the way you think is best. And, oh, by the way, align when the pen is retracted.
Do a good turn daily!

Sort of think of it this way.

When the pen is in extended, it is typically in use and the hand covers it.
When the pen is retracted, it is typically not in use, so that is when it will best be seen.

Therefore, aligning usually makes more sense retracted.

Thanks for the info. I have typically aligned the grain with the pen retracted but I have questioned it a few times and never really saw it discussed anywhere.

I'm not sure if I'm qualified to answer questions, yet, but I align mine close (retracted).
It just seems more appealing, for the exact reasons that Jerry mentioned.
