I am looking at making a few segmented pens. When you use the thin veneers in your segments, where do you get this veneer from? Do you resaw your own? Do you buy the veneers? If you cut your own, how do you get them smooth enough for a good joint?

the answer is yes to all of the above.

On the ones I cut myself, I use a drum sander.

(Which BTW, I learned how cut veneer while doing flat woodworking)

Like Ron I cut my own.I also dye them.
Pen crafting is a great craft but not all pencrafters are wood workers.
I was a wood butcher long before I even knew you could make a pen.
There are sources of veneers available but you are limited to what they offer. That is why I prefer to do my own.
The most common size offered by is around 1/16 th thick. The cross in my inlay is .050 which is thinner than that.

You can try Wood Craft, they offer them.Try googling up veneers and you will also find suppliers.
I am sure someone will post a source.
