scrimshaw colorant?

For those that have done scrimshaw on pens, is India ink suitable for use on pens? Ie, once it dries, will it ever leave residue on hands? Or is there a more hard-curing colorant for scrimshaw?

I have a very, very talented friend who is a superb artist but has yet to dive into scrimshaw, I am going to give him some PR blanks to scrimshaw for practice, and if he's good, he'll be my scrimshawmeister.

I have a scrimshawed powder horn that used India ink for the dark lines. The horn was made in 1922. No ink has rubbed out or left a residue. Hope that helps.
