OK, help here. Is it technique only or do I have something else going on. 1 month hiatus from pen turning, but back on the lathe today. Turning some spalted soft maple, solid but not stabilized.
When cutting with the skew in my weak direction, left to right, all is fine.
When cutting in my strong direction, right to left, I can't keep it round. It is either out of round or kinda spiraled.
I did re-grind my skew for a longer taper when turning my previous blanks based on a Captain Eddie video and did not have the issue before the break.
Any ideas or experience?

This has happened to me wiith softer woods when I use my oval skew - which has a long taper compared to my other skews. I was spinning fast like I always do so I figure it was angle of the bevel giving me grief, it seemed like it wanted to wander a bit.
