Was using some scotchbrite the other day to remove surface rust. It has abrasive qualities of course. Does it have any use in pen finishing?? Maybe toward the end of sanding?

I'm fairly new at wood turning and usually use the non woven pads in flat work, between coats of poly or varnish.

I do use the non-woven abrasive pads (scotchbrite) pads as a finishing step in pen making. I usually sand to 400 grit, then use the pads that are the equivalent of 00 , 000, and 0000 steel wool.
At this point what I do varies depending on the wood and desired finish. If the wood is soft, I apply a sanding sealer, MM1500 and 1800, BLO, MM to 2400. If it is a harder wood, then I apply BLO and MM to 2400.

After that, I top coat, Friction polish, CA or Deft. final coat is usaully TSW.
(MM = Micro Mesh, BLO = Boiled Linseed Oil, CA = CyanoAcrylate Glue)

Browse through the achives here, the is an enormous amount of usefull information. And EVERYONE here is Aces to deal with. The humor is pretty dry at times, But this is an awsome collection of knowledge sharers. (is that a word[?])

Enjoy, and welcome to the addiction. [:D]
