Satin finish

I will try posting this question here as well. I am in the process of making aan aluminum pen and want to put a satin finish on it. I have seen some great satin finishes and was wondering what the secret is??? I tried straight sanding it with 400 grit and did not like the look. Then I tried to sand with a back and forth motion and still did not like the look. Anyone that has used a satin finish on your metal pens how do you do it and if you have any close up photos would be great. Thanks frop the replys.

How about trying Scotchbrite? You get very fine ( yellow) from a automotive paint store.

Yea Johnnycnc mentioned that in the finishing board. I guess I am going to give that a try. Yellow pads. Thanks.
