Some time ago, I got a 1" inertia sander from Sorby for their microtools, and recently tried it on some pen projects. It does a great job of sanding, and doesn't leave cross grain scratches on the blanks. I am really terrible at leaving these on my blanks, and this was an agreeable surprise. Obviously this can only be used on reasonably straight profiles, but it does a great job there.

Has anyone else tried using an inertia sander on pens? I don't think power sanding would be appropriate, you would sand through the wood almost instantly, but this unpowered sander works fine for me.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Power sanding works fine. Should not need it with coarse grit abrasives. Usually not worth the effort to use it though.

As you too techniques improve, the starting point moves to higher grit numbers.

Not a thing wrong with use of inertial Sanders if it works for you to get the product you want.

You can use one with abrasives up to p4000 with abranet pads.
