I'd like to make a pen for the maestro of the symphony that I'm working with right now. He is from Russia. As of yet, I do not have a "Woods of the World" type of book in my collection. Can anyone tell me if there is a nice turning wood that is namely from Russia. If you can help that would be great! Thanks

Johnathan

One of my persoanl favorites. You can buy from BB is Russian Olivewood Burl.
Most likey will come from Utah but the trees origin is Russian.
Plus who is going to ever ask you where Russian Olivewood comes from----LOL[:D]

Wow Anthony, that's VERY pretty wood! I particularly like the cap, where it looks like a real eye staring out- but it might get kind of weird to see if I used a pen with that on it everyday!

I looked and most of the commercialy harvested Russian hardwoods did not seem to be very figured woods.

Siberian Elm Burl while not a real Russian wood might also work for you.

MAY NOT BE THE PRETTIEST OF MATERIALS BUT YOU CAN GET BALTIC PLYWOOD AND USE ANALINE DYES TO ADD COLOUR. IT MAY BE CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE REGION AND THEREBY PASS AS RUSSIAN. I DO HAVE SOME COLOURED BLANKS AND I WILL GIVE THEM TO YOU IF YOU COVER POSTAGE TO USA. TRYING TO HELP.

The name IRISH bog oak may have something to do with the region of origin. [:D]

Siberian Pea Tree and you can get stabilized blanks from Craft Supply:

I have turned several pens from this wood (unstabilized) and it has a very nice look.

Johnathan Siberian pea tree native to Siberia-Mongolia- N China . Less elegantly called caragana . Wood is comparatively soft , but turns well . Sanding definitely required . The natural colour variation in the wood allows several totally different appearing pens to be made from it. I can supply in unstabilised form for turnings up to 2 inch dia.
