And are there other plating options? Rockler only catalogs a generic "gold" plating.

I really like this pen - it has a more solid feel than a "normal" euro. Except for the somewhat goofy bushing (which I guess is used to avoid cutting a tenon) it's a great one to make.

Any word on the source and maybe upgraded plating versions?

The pen seems to be the round top that uses the parker refill instead of the 7mm version. The bottom of the pen top is parted off to the tube instead of using a tenon. It is a berea kit and comes in better platings than what Rockler offers.
