Rikon mini lathe question

My Rikon multi speed mini lathe has a springy metal "chip deflector" underneath the cutting area that seems to just cause sawdust and chips to bunch up and get in the way of sliding the tool banjo back and forth. Anyone know any reason why I couldn't just remove this useless whodjamawadjit?

Yes it's to keep them off the top of the motor i just bent my down so the chips will fall off give that a try.

Same here,you don't want to take it of,i just brush the chips off when they start piling up.

It also keeps the CA from getting in there. My pan has some nice buildup of it
