As mentioned, the capacitor needs to be replaced. While waiting for a replacement, you can still use the lathe at reduced power by spinning the spindle in the direction you want it to go just before you turn on the power. It will take longer to come up to speed and can be stalled out easier but there may be enough power to do penturning and sanding. I had this happen to a drill press a few years ago.

Don't put anything on that lathe until you get it going forward again. I had a problem with this once and it turned three of my[:eek:)] best pens back into pen blanks before I could get it unplugged[:0]

This is my original lathe, I have since bought a Jet Mini but I still want it to be for my buffing wheels but it still backs itself out. I will check on the capacitor to see how much it costs. It is only a Craftsman. Thank you all
