I got this Hickory Burl last week and just ain't had any time to spend with it.
Must of made it mad because it started busting apart.
Well I caught it in time-----no bowl but there should be some awesome pen blanks.
here's what it looks like now----I will get it cut into pen blanks later today---I am going to Anchorseal them.

Gary, I found out with the walnut buy I did that the best wood warped, cracked and twisted the worst. Luckely I figured it out early and stopped cutting wet wood into small pieces. Just one more reason that the good stuff is so expensive. so much of it is lost in the process.

And you probably know that Hickory and Pecan are bad about splitting ANYWAY, so a burl is just that much worse.

Back 500 yrs ago, they would have coated it with bee's wax, dug a hole in the ground about 2 feet deep and buried it for 5 yrs. That would slow the drying down to a snails pace keeping the integrity of the wood intact. If it was my burl, I'd put a thick coat of oil based paint on all the exposed surfaces, keep any bark on it intact and put the entire burl in the attic for a couple years.

Well....you already cut them. I was going to tell you about the Redbud burl I cut. The blanks warped and twisted sumptin' awful. Got a bunch more in the garage drying slowly. When dry, THEN I'll cut into blanks. And, THEN I'll stabilize before trying to turn.

I have cut 100's of burls---if this one was left alone it would busted to the point that there would of been nothing left.
It's been very wet here and she was loaded with water.
Plus have you ever tried to resaw dry Shag Bark Hickory-----not fun.

Fred ---if I would of roughed it out the day it arrived and boiled it-----maybe that would of worked.
But in the long run------Killer pen blanks work for me.
