I am a new turner and have mess up a few blanks after gluing in the tubes. Anyone have any tips or tricks to salvage these tubes? I have thought about just turning down until the blank breaks of the tube.

Yes, several people do this, including me. I always keep extra tubes on hand but still turn down old or messed up blanks to salvage the tubes. I uses a gouge mostly when turning them off. The I use 80 - 120 grit sandpaper for fine quick cleaning.

I turn as much wood off of the tube as i can to salvage the tube, then take the sandpaper to it to clean it up while still on the lathe,no since in throwing away a good tube unless you gots lots of moola to buy more.

I keep them and use them when I can. And that turns out to be more often than I thought.

Frank, I am glad to see others do this. I have started doing this regularly lately. Thought I was getting eccentric, but now I know that I am just normal. [:)] I still recycle my messed up tubes. Maybe I am eccentric. [)]
