No threads on this one just a small gold band. On the top side the cap fits on to a slightly rounded over piece about 3/16 wide, but the bottom
is just a round ring about an 1/8 wide that is flat.

You have to "double" press the top part of the pen to seat the tranny.
This design is a nightmare.
They are popular sellers but my failure rate with this pen is somewhere around 50%.
Even when I turn and assemble it correctly a customer can over turn it and unseat the tranny.
It is the main reason I switched to the Perfect Fit.

I agree with Eagle that consistent fitting of the transmission in the WC American Classic Ball point design is problematic.
However, unlike the ballpoints, the WC American Classic rollerball does not have a transmission. The snap on cap has sort of a plastic o-ring which compress fits a slight groove on either end of the body. It seems to generate a different problem - sometimes fitting too loosely and sometime too snugly. I've not turned a whole bunch of them but have had success with the adjustment described in the instructions.
