I have had some recent success with curly maple, spalted maple and spalted hackberry taking dye real well.
The dyes I have been using are $4/8 oz of RIT liquid fabric dye.I apply to my sanded pen blank and then coat with CA finish polished out with MM.

How about Purple Heart. If you apply some heat after you have finished sanding, you can get a deep purple colour. I do this by using a cloth and applying pressure as if I was polishing. Make sure you glue the tubes in using epoxy because CA will react to the heat and fail. I made a slimline for a friend 2 years ago and the purple colour is still rich.

I recently made this pen using curly maple and Purple TransTint dye.

Mixed about 10-15 drops of the TransTint dye in 2-3 tablespoons of denatured alcohol. Applied with a shop towel. Finished with CA.
