Pulling apart pens

I have been turning some PSI 24K Slimline Click Pro pens and been having problems with the plastic click mechanism not working once assembled. The top and bottom are pressed together into the center and ink is loaded through the screw on tip. I need to separate to two ends to be able to remove and replace the mechanism. Any suggestions?

I've used a thick piece of leather wrapped around the end that needs to come out and then twist with a pair of channel locks. I had to do that on a few pens just last week. As long as I was careful to keep the jaws on the leather, everything worked out fine, and I was able to re-insert with no problems as well.
