I do most of my pen turning with a big skew, but I have a 3/8" spindle gouge I use from time to time. It's the Benjamin's Best from PSI (good tools, especially for the price). I have not modified the grind from the way it came.

Do you guys prefer a fingernail grind on a spindle gouge for pens?

I just roll the tip in place and let the grinder take off the squared corners of the gouge. Don't know if that's a true fingernail profile, although it sort of looks like one. It's my preferred tool.

I prefer the fingernail grind for most spindle turning including pens. Actually most of my bowl gouges also have a fingernail grind. Bought the Henry Taylor profile set from CSUSA, this really helps with setting up the grinding jig for a consistent grind, buy then I need all the help I can get with grinding!:)[:I]
