Anyone else have this happen? Andy Little and I talked about this a few months ago, maybe a little longer and I had forgotten about it as I just didn't add the componet set to my inventory as it looked too much like the Jr. Statesman and I'm satisfied with the Jr. Statesman . Actually Andy sent it to me to try. I made it and gave it to my son in Ft. Worth along with the leather pouch pictured. Last week he and the family were up to visit he showed it to me and said he always kept it in the pouch covered when not in use. Where the cover goes off and on it rubs the clip and the result is the wearing off of the chrome as pictured. He left it here and today or tomorrow I'll replace the clip with a Jr. Statesman or Jr. Retro clip, I think the clips on the Triton are the same size.

This is the one of the reasons, why when i decided to upgrade to better kits. That the triton was not one of them because it was chrome and not rhodium. Also, i dont like a up gold.

I had a statesman that I carried in my pocket (pants, jacket, anywhere I could stuff it) for a couple of years. It was rhodium plated and it wore off too. I figured it would not have mattered what plating or how thick...that environment was just too abrasive.

If the pen is placed in the leather pouch as shown, any plating is going wear off if rubbing is localized as it seems to be. We all know how thick the plating is on the pens we make. Chrome is up there with the best of durability.

Brian, not to get into the ware-ability of one plating vs another (we've been down that road) as this could be just one of those things but I have been caring a Jr, Retro Gator in the same type pouch for a little over two years and no sign of ware at all. I carry it in my front pants pocket and use it daily, this one is six months old and my son keeps it at work in his desk.

Roy:
The ONLY issue i've had with the Chrome Triton was that one that I sent you. I have nearly 1,000 of these in the market place with no other issues, what so ever.

In trying to "run down" what could have caused your issue, I spoke with several chemical specialist here at the University of Georgia and at the University of North Carolina.

In Fact, the Triton chrome plating has far surpassed the wearability of the "rhodium" coating of the Jr. Statesman.

My experts tell me that this was likely an isolated incident that had to do with the "tanning" method of the leather pen case. Apparently, other countries are allowed to using caustic tanning methods that can not be used here.

The Triton upgrade gold still has a ways to go in durability. BUT, it terms of "Customer Warranty Issues", the Triton here has STILL had far fewer problems that either the "coated" Retros or Staties. Don't get me started on Dayacom thread couplers!

Andy, here's where we will agree to disagree and remain friends as you know I on the other hand have sold thousands of Jr's with no plating problems and have never had one sent back for plating. You could be on the right track as to the leather, but so far none on any other pen in these cases and I've sold almost 200 of these cases. Guess I'll mark it up to $#@t happens.....

LMAO!
Same here Roy. Sh$$T happens. The VERY COOL thing is that between us, we've made thousands of sets from different manufacturers with no plating issues.

A few years ago, this was not the case. I think our suppliers are getting better, all of them.....Even the Chinese models that I've been "experimenting with" are much better than in the past.

That's a good thing.
