Hello All,

This site is a fabulous resource! I am relatively new to pen turning, having completed a few pen kits for gifts this past Christmas. I wanted to make some pencils with the Pentel mechanism. Using the specifications provided by Don Ward aka its_vergil I purchased a step drill form W. L. Fuller and ordered a mandrel from John Grounds aka Chuck Key. Wala! Pentel pencils with maple bodies. Thanks to all who took their time to provide information.

George

I've turned several Pentels recently; building inventory for later. I also use a step bit from Fuller and a mandrel from Chuck Key. About 1/8 inch from the nib at the step there is a place where the wood gets very thin. I've had a few break at this spot when I've used blanks that were diagonal cut or segmented .

Your pencils look great, good work.
