I notice that at least one seller on eBay, who has what looks like nice wood, claims that the wood has been saturated with Pentacryl. I've seen comments about some wood from eBay having some pretty awful gunk on it that makes a mess. What about Pentacryl? Does it make the wood harder to turn?

Gerry,

I've never bought from that seller, as the Pentacryl scares me off. I have never used it, but have used the Minwax Wood Hardener, and do not like it at all for pen turning.

Clint of McFamilywood uses a waxy gunk on his wood that is messy. That could be what you are talking about. His wood is nice, just needs a lot of cleaning prior to use.

FWIW,

If your talking about the guy from the great white north I have purchased blanks from him. Top quality, super nice but they don't go cheep. If you do get a buy you will loose in shipping, buy American. As far as the Pentacryl not a problem, it will discolor the blank surface when dry. Use DNA prior to finishing. Happy bidding[:)]
