Yes, the Schmidt DSM 2006 is a better mechanism. No, it is not for slimline pencils. The Schmidt mechanism is a replacement for a parker-style refill and fits many (but not all) kits that use a parker-style refill. Some of the kits that don't accept the Schmidt mechanism as shipped can be modified to fit.

The Schmidt DSM 2006 and Pentel pencil mechanisms are the only ones I use. None of the kit pencils are nearly as robust.

+1 Pentel. A few off the shelf models work including the Pentel Sharp P203/P205/P207 and P209. Local big box office supply stores usually have a selection to choose from.
