We all make pens from acrylic, wood and sometimes metal and sometimes a combination. I also know some people use clays. My question does anyone make pens using other materials? I am not talking embeding with clear resin. I am talking about materials such as leather, braidings of some sort, cloth of some sort or other materials. If so do you have any photos and can you give us a little background as to what it is and how well does it play out there? If you do use something, are you using a kit pen to aply to and if so what kit?

I have made pens from a multitude of materials, this pen was made from a stripped, modified Dental Handpiece gutted, reworked inside fitted with a Slimline brasses and winder as a working pen. The metals include stainless and brass multi threads, removal of air and water tubes etc, the timber is Hairy Oak cut at 90 degrees across as part of a pen rest and set for a mate. Pics show detail outside using exposures to show the detail of the metal and timber.

Using three brass knurled Darts a composite pen was made fitted to a score book also using Slimline parts to enable a twist mech and easy to replace the biro using two brasses.

White Corian and African Ebony Slimline bits.

Handpainted, drilled , faced Beads.

Old pics bad luck changed computers a while ago so pics only to give ideas.

Have fun I do.

Kind regards Peter.

You're welcome Gordon. The .pdf file was originally a power point presentation I used for a symposium demo on "Alternative Materials". Most, if not all, of the en pictures were submitted by IAP members.
Do a good turn Ailey!

Don, thanks for pointing this reference out. And, thanks for putting this tutorial together. I found several things I want to try.

Excellent post. Basically I wanted to show some of the Newbies that there are other materials to use and other ways to make a pen. To explore and expand the basics. That is a good starting point and well put together. Hopefully as time goes by this can be expanded even more. Thanks for posting.:good:
